This ice cream has become a family tradition. We make it at least once every summer.
Ingredients
- 4 cups heavy cream
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 1/3 cups sugar
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- Add-ins as desired, eg
- Crushed Oreos
- Reese’s pieces
- Strawberry chunks
- Gummy bears
- Marshmallows & Graham Crackers
- Literally Anything
Other Things You’ll Need
- 1.5 pounds of ice cream or rock salt
- 20-25 lbs of ice (crushed or cubes)
- 1 5 gallon hardware store bucket with lid
- 10-15 1/2 pint jars with screw on lids (We use jam sized mason jars. you could use anything that seals tightly.)
Best Step 1: Mix all of the ingredients in a pot and heat just until the sugar is dissolved. Chill the mixture.
Fast Step 1: Mix all ingredients together thoroughly. You may have some undissolved sugar in your ice cream. It’s fine. It will still taste good.
Step 2: Put desired mix-ins into 1/2 pint jars, then top off with ice cream mixture and seal tightly. We let each kid choose their own mix ins, and then write their names on top of the lids.
Step 3: Put ice, salt and jars into the 5 gallon bucket, alternating layers so the jars aren’t all touching. Fill the bucket as full of ice as you can. Using more salt will allow the water bath temp to go lower
Step 4: Roll the bucket around the yard or a park for 45-60 minutes. Top off the bucket with ice every 15 minutes or so as it melts.
Step 5: Pull the ice cream out, rinse off the jars (they will be salty on the outside!) and enjoy!
